Hostels in George Town Penang

For many backpackers, travellers and adventurers, checking Hostleword.com and finding somewhere to stay for a few nights is second nature. However, if you’re looking to stay in George Town, Penang you should know that they actually don’t have anything listed. Instead of missing this incredible and picturesque city, we’ve put together a list of hostels in Georgetown Penang just for you. Read on for more!

WASSUP YOUTH HOSTEL

The perfect option for anyone on a budget, the Wassup Youth Hostel can boast decent amenities like a swimming pool and bicycle hire and is also well situated pretty close to the centre of George Town. It’s decorated in the eclectic way hostels often are, which helps to give it a friendly, laid back vibe: nobody is going to judge you for looking a little bit tired from your travels, and you’re likely to find friends in the common areas. The rooms are soundproofed and air conditioned, so you can get away from the heat and bustle of George Town and have some quiet downtime if you prefer.

MoonTree47

Think you’ll be on public transport a lot? MoonTree47 is less than 1km away from the Komata Bus Terminals. This provides access around the city and into the surrounding areas, with long and short distance coaches stopping there (always remember to check before you travel) that can take you around the island and the mainland. Even without the location, the MoonTree47 is great: it’s beautifully decorated, clean and there are lots of options for shared and private rooms and shared and private bathrooms. There’s also a garden, bar, kitchen and even a postbox, if you need to send a few cards.

Lincoln’s Backpackers

The Lincoln’s Backpackers is a good choice for smokers. A lot of hostels don’t allow it, so if that’s going to be an issue for you or anyone you’re travelling with, try the Lincoln’s Backpackers. The hostel itself is pretty nice, too- the rooms are clean and secure, there’s an option to rent bicycles if you’d like to cycle around the city and it’s ideally located for a lot of landmarks and tourist attractions. You’re also only 510m away from a hospital, so if something bad should happen you won’t have to travel far for medical attention.

Ryokan Muntri Boutique Hostel

If you’re going to Georgetown with 20 of your closest friends, the Ryokan Muntri will be great! They’re used to large groups of young travellers, and most of their rooms are dormitories that host 4-6 people, so you can all stay close. The road the hostel is on is pretty quiet, but it’s near a lot of attractions including Little India, Love Lane and Komtar (the tallest building, conveniently with a bus station underneath). If you just want to stay and hang out for a bit, there’s a games room for socialising.

OYO 89809 Sogor Girls’ Dormitory

As the name suggests, the Sogor Girls’ Dormitory is a place just for female travellers. It does, however, accommodate children and offer a babysitting service, so if you’re looking to take your children to George Town but could do with an evening to yourself or with some friends, Sogor Girls’ Dormitory can accommodate you. There’s also a sauna, if you need a bit of a pamper! There’s free, unlimited use of washing machines and dryers, so you can slip into something clean and fresh afterwards. You’ll also be close to bars, restaurants and Nafore Square, the heritage site. It’s affordable and nice inside, and provides a secure, women-only space.

YMCA Penang

It’s fun to stay at the YMCA Penang! This YMCA is especially nice, with perks ranging from free breakfast, yoga classes, meeting rooms, complimentary toiletries and a taxi service to help you get around. It was recently refurbished, so everything is new and good quality. The rooms even have blackout curtains- perfect for anyone feeling jet lagged, exhausted and hungover. The YMCA is also well located, near markets, temples and restaurants, and it’s close to Island Hospital.

Silver Shine Guesthouse

Finally, the Silver Shine Guesthouse. One of the main problems with this guesthouse was that it was a little dusty, but during the Coronavirus pandemic they’ve really stepped up the cleanliness to make this a better place to stay. It’s gorgeous, with wood panelling and plants everywhere – very different from most hostel’s random looks. It’s also nicely situated and close to Love Lane, Armenian Street and some great street art. Wifi and air conditioning are available throughout.

George Town is a lot of fun, and really great for anyone visiting Malaysia. Finding the right place to stay is so important, and anyone will tell you that being in the right hostel will make your visit perfect. We hope you enjoy your stay in one of these Hostels in George Town Penang.
